Buying A Used Truck: Common Transmission Problems To Look Out For On A Test Drive

Posted on

When you are looking for a used truck, you may be excited and ready to take handful on a test drive. Before you settle on just one vehicle, you should test drive a variety to see what you like the best. In addition, you should take some time to listen to the transmission and engine while you drive.

Underlying problems can reside in used trucks and if you purchase a vehicle without being fully knowledgeable about it, you may find that you need some expensive repairs down the road.

Not sure what to look for?

Common Transmission Problems to Check For

When you take a vehicle out on a test drive, you will need to keep the music off so that you can hear how the vehicle sounds. In addition, you need to make sure that you pay attention to the way the vehicle drives as this will help you determine if the truck is worth the buy.

1. One of the first things you need to pay attention to when you test drive a used vehicle is whether or not the gears shift easily when you accelerate. If you notice a hard shift when the vehicle is switching gears, you need to address this with the dealership. Often, this slipping means that the transmission is not working properly and you will eventually need repairs performed.

2. The next thing you need to watch out for is a hesitation when you place the vehicle in gear or when you accelerate. If you find that the vehicle takes a while to move forward in drive, then there is a problem. The vehicle you test drive should shift easily into gear and start moving seamlessly.

3. If you notice fluid underneath the vehicle, check to make sure it is not transmission fluid. If it is, this is a sign of a problem and if it persists and is not corrected, you may have a dead transmission on your hands.

To identify transmission fluid, allow the vehicle to run in a stationary position for a few minutes. Move the vehicle and observe the fluid under the truck. If the fluid is red in color or it has a sweet smell to it, then it is likely your transmission leaking.

4. When test driving a potential truck, make sure you allow the vehicle to sit in neutral and listen for any noises from the transmission. If you do observe some noises, this could mean that there are worn out parts inside and you should have it inspected prior to purchase.

Average Cost of Transmission Repair

The cost to repair your transmission will depend on what needs to be done to it. If you purchase a used truck that is in need of transmission repairs, you can expect to pay anywhere between $150 and $200 for a transmission leak.

If you end up needing a transmission replacement, you can expect to pay anywhere between $4,000 to $8,000.

To prevent transmission failure and the expense of repairing or replacing it, you should always test drive a used truck prior to purchasing it. Check out a dealer like Auto Max to get started.
